Well, you can tell a story in many ways.
Relax, just shoot it on your iPhone, sometimes that'll be all you need.
But, if you want to capture the emotion of the story, and really do the story honor you have to know how to use every tool you have together in symphony. Most importantly you have to know how to break the ice with the person telling the story. They need to feel comfortable and be oriented with this strange dark studio you've set up. It's safest to assume they've never been in front of a camera before, and there's also a good chance they've never even shared this story with anyone before they've decided to share it with you or your audience.
Then, oh, yeah, you have to set up a studio that can convey the gravity of the story they are telling. Because really you're not just capturing their story, you're telling their story along with them. If you light them right, you'll tell the audience about the darkness of their struggle, or the brightness and clarity they found in their redemption. If your mic is close to them and free from the drone of air conditioning then it can be free to capture the nuances of their breath as they start to cry. Then, you use a second camera a tight with a tight shot of the person that draws them into the story being told.
Afterward, it is your responsibility to honor them properly, to select music, cut, and truly honor the story that has been entrusted to you.
Here are some that I am grateful I had an opportunity of being a part of telling.
Enjoy,
